Ford vs. Chevy: Which Brand is Best?

2021 Chevy Camaro vs. 2020 Ford Mustang

Drivers have been comparing Ford vs. Chevy for more than a century, and these two rivals aren’t going anywhere anytime soon! In fact, whether you’re comparing Ford vs. Chevy trucks or you’re looking at each make’s reputation for reliability, you’re going to find that Chevrolet has a unique edge in the marketplace.

Ford vs. Chevy Trucks: Silverado or F-150?

Covering the Best Used Cars for 2021, the experts at iSeeCars.com selected the Chevy Silverado 1500 as the runner up in their Best Full-Size Pickup Truck category. Meanwhile, the Ford F-150 was nowhere to be found! Here’s why:

  • According to Autoblog, who ranked a wide range of pickups according to how well they hold their value, the Ford F-150 depreciates more quickly than any other truck!
  • Another independent study from iSeeCars.com determined that 2.2% of Chevy Silverado 1500 pickups had reached more than 200,000 miles. For the F-150, that number was 2.1%. This difference is small but significant: since so many of these trucks are sold each year, even a single tenth of a percentage represents thousands of vehicles.

Yes, the current Ford F-150 has slightly higher towing and payload capacities than the Chevy Silverado 1500. Even so, both work harder than most rivals, and the two are equally capable in the vast majority of daily circumstances faced by Sicklerville-area drivers. Two more important differences demand your attention:

  • The 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 has earned a perfect 5-star predicted reliability rating from J.D. Power. The Ford F-150 came close, but its own 4.5-star rating falls short.
  • Gas mileage might not be your first consideration, but if your work requires long drives from job site to job site, it should be! Here the Silverado 1500 reigns supreme: comparing each brand’s diesel offering, the Silverado wins out with 33 mpg highway, compared to just 27 mpg, at maximum, with the Ford.

Ford vs. Chevy: Reliability Across All Segments

J.D. Power annually assesses each big manufacturer’s reputation for reliability by calculating the number of problems experienced per every 100 vehicles sold. (“Problems Per 100” = “PP100”).

  • Their 2020 study found Chevy to rank at 123 PP100, while Ford came in at 126 PP100.
  • While an average of three more problems per 100 vehicles sold might not seem too shocking at first glance, the scale of each manufacturer’s operations gives this small disparity plenty of weight.

In the iSeeCars.com study on used cars that we referenced earlier on, the Chevy Suburban took home the top spot in the extremely competitive Best Full-Size SUV category! Chevy vehicles also earned second-place in three other categories.

Ford only ranked first in the category for sports cars, where the Camaro ranked second. Even so, we think that most Sewell and Williamstown enthusiasts could be even happier with a Corvette! Furthermore, Ford only earned two honorable mentions.

Ford vs. Chevy: Pricing and Safety

Ford and Chevrolet are virtually neck-and-neck in terms of pricing, and it’s not hard to see why. These two manufacturers compete across almost every segment for precisely the same sorts of drivers. Warranty coverage and owner benefits are likewise similar for each brand.

In terms of safety, Ford earned a couple more Top Safety Picks from the IIHS in 2020. However, Chevrolet has its own winner in the Equinox SUV! What’s more, Chevy offers unique Teen Driver technology that can help you protect your family from afar.
