Conventional/Regular Oil, What is it?

Regular oil, otherwise known as “conventional” oil, is a petroleum based liquid lubricant that has been used in internal combustion engines for roughly a century. It’s purpose, like most any mechanical oil, is to provide lubrication to internal parts that are subjected to friction and heat, thus preventing (or delaying) engine wear. This product is distilled from crude oil, after having been mined from the ground.

Ok, So What’s Synthetic Oil?

Synthetic oil is also a petroleum based product, similar to conventional oil. However, it provides superior lubrication and is more stable over time. Synthetic oils provide the benefit of oxidizing less easily than regular oils, and are also better for keeping your internal engine components clean. Synthetic oils are chemically developed to provide desired properties that make them better (and also more expensive) than conventional oils. Synthetic oils also:

  • Offer enhanced engine cleaning properties
  • Better protect critical turbocharger parts (when equipped)
  • Are less viscous at lower temperatures

What about Synthetic Blend Oil?

There aren’t just two types of oils – in fact there’s a third! This oil is made up of a combination of synthetic and conventional oil, earning it its name: Synthetic Blend. This option is often available for a lower cost than you’d pay for a full synthetic oil change, but it also provides some of the latter’s benefits. It’s worth noting that some vehicles do require full synthetic oil, so always be sure to check your owner’s manual!
