Do Electric Cars Use Oil?

Close Up Of Hand Holding Power Cable For electric car

You know that your new EV lacks a gas-powered engine, but do electric cars need oil? No, they don’t! Although EVs still require regular maintenance, you’ll never have to worry about scheduling an electric car oil change. Learn about the A’s and B’s of electric vehicle care with Chevrolet Of Turnersville, and remember that our service center can help you complete every item on your maintenance checklist!

What Fluids Do You Need to Change in Electric Vehicles?

Electric cars don’t need oil changes, but there are other important fluids that you’ll need to monitor as the seasons change in Sicklerville and Sewell. Here’s what you should know:

  • Brake Fluid: Brake fluid is required in any braking system. This hydraulic fluid allows you to deploy the full force of your brakes with less pressure on the pedal, but it picks up moisture and can become less effective over time.
  • Transmission fluid: Many EVs feature a continuously variable transmission without traditional gears, but these transmissions still require fluid in order to operate effectively. Over time, this fluid can accumulate debris. You’ll need to flush the system and add more in order to ensure that everything continues to operate as intended.
  • Coolant: Like any vehicle, EVs generate significant amounts of heat during normal operations. Coolant helps to regulate the temperature in your EV, protecting the battery as well as other vulnerable systems.

Although fluid changes are important, your EV’s required maintenance list won’t end here. You should still plan on visiting our service center at least once or twice a year for tire service. As with any vehicle, the tires on your EV will need to be rotated frequently and switched out every few years.

Electric Vehicle Parts

When you schedule service at Chevrolet Of Turnersville, we won’t just take care of any tire maintenance or fluid changes that your vehicle requires. We’ll also inspect key parts in order to ensure that everything is working as intended. Our EV inspection covers:

  • Charging ports
  • Traction motors
  • Onboard charger
  • DC-DC converter
  • Battery
  • Thermal system

Note that electric vehicles differ from hybrid cars, which still utilize a gas-powered engine—and therefore still require oil changes.
